Philip Treacy on Why Hats Are Radical

Millinery quote by Philip Treacy on radical hats - Kathryn Lee Millinery

"Hats are radical, only people that wear hats understand that."

— Philip Treacy

This is my favourite Treacy quote. And he is completely right. Until you have walked into a room wearing a hat, you cannot understand what it feels like. The energy shifts. The attention shifts. You shift.

There is nothing else in fashion that announces your presence quite so boldly. Hats are visible, unapologetic, and impossible to ignore. In a culture that often rewards conformity, choosing to wear a hat is a small act of rebellion that carries enormous power.

The word "radical" comes from the Latin radix, meaning root. And hats do go to the root of something: the fundamental human desire to express identity, to be noticed, and to refuse to disappear.

"My clients are radical. They might not think of themselves that way, but every woman who chooses to wear a hat in a world that has forgotten them is making a statement."

— Kathryn Lee

A Little History

Treacy was born in 1967 in the tiny village of Ahascragh in County Galway, Ireland. He studied at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin before winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London. From those humble beginnings in rural Ireland, he became one of the most celebrated milliners in history. His journey from Galway to Buckingham Palace is one of fashion's greatest stories.
