Tuesday 3 November 2026. The race that stops a nation. If you are planning your Flemington outfit, start with the hat and build everything around it. That single decision will define your entire look.
"I have dressed women for the Melbourne Cup for years, and the ones who look the most polished always started with the hat. The outfit follows. Not the other way around."
— Kathryn Lee
The 2026 Melbourne Cup Carnival at a Glance
- Derby Day, Saturday 31 October: Black and white only. The most formally dressed day of the carnival. Monochrome is tradition, and the crowd takes it seriously.
- Melbourne Cup, Tuesday 3 November: Maximum glamour. Bold colour, striking headpieces, and fashion-forward styling. This is the day to go big.
- Oaks Day, Thursday 5 November: Traditionally known as Ladies Day. Pastels, florals, and feminine palettes. Think garden party elegance.
- Stakes Day, Saturday 7 November: Relaxed and family-friendly. Smaller hats, headbands, and smart casual dressing.
Dress Code by Enclosure
Flemington enforces different standards depending on where you are watching.
The Birdcage and Members Enclosure require formal racewear: tailored dresses or structured separates, statement headpieces, and closed-toe shoes. No exposed midriffs, no denim, no thongs. Men need a suit and tie. This is where you will see the most striking millinery, and where a bespoke hat truly comes into its own.
General Admission allows more flexibility, but a hat or fascinator is still expected and always appreciated. Smart casual is the minimum. Skip the denim. Skip the sneakers. This is Flemington.
FOTF Tip
Fashions on the Field judges score millinery at 20% of your total look. They are looking for craftsmanship, proportion to your frame, and how well the hat complements rather than competes with your outfit. A bespoke piece from a professional milliner gives you a clear advantage.
Colours and Trends for 2026
Wide-brimmed hats are having a strong moment, along with sculptural headpieces in unexpected textures. Think parisisal straw paired with hand-dyed silk flowers, or a felt percher accented with vintage veiling. Terracotta, sage green, warm blush, and butter yellow are appearing across the spring collections. If you love a classic, navy and ivory never miss.
Book Early
Bespoke pieces take four to six weeks, and the best milliners fill up fast from August onwards. If you want something made specifically for your outfit, face shape, and colouring, do not leave it to October. Start the conversation now, and you will walk into Flemington knowing your look is one of a kind.
"The women who win best dressed do not leave their hat to the last minute. They plan months ahead. That preparation is part of the confidence you see on the day."
