As the mother of the bride or groom, you will be in almost every photograph from the ceremony, the family portraits, the speeches, and the dancing. Your hat needs to look beautiful from every angle, in every light, and across hours of celebration. Here is how to choose one that photographs as well as it looks in person.

"Mother of the bride clients are some of my favourites. The brief is always the same: I want to look beautiful, I want to complement my daughter, and I do not want anything that will look dated in the photos in twenty years. I can do all three."

Proportion for Photography

In photographs, a hat that is too large can cast shadows across the face and make you look hidden. A hat that is too small can look like an afterthought. The sweet spot is a medium-brimmed hat or a sculptural headpiece that frames the face without covering it.

  • Best shapes: Pillboxes, medium brims, disc fascinators, and sculpted headpieces.
  • Avoid: Very wide brims (they shadow the face in group shots) and very small combs (they disappear in photos).
  • The angle test: Ask your milliner to check the hat from above, below, and both sides. You will be photographed from all angles.

Colour Coordination with the Bride

Coordinate with the bridal party but do not match exactly. If the bridesmaids are in dusty pink, choose a hat in a complementary tone like champagne, soft gold, or powder blue. Avoid white, ivory, and anything that competes with the bride.

Comfort Matters

You will wear this hat for eight to twelve hours. Comfort is not optional. A well-fitted bespoke piece with petersham ribbon inside the crown, secure combs, and a balanced weight distribution means you can wear it from ceremony to last dance without a single adjustment.

A Bespoke Piece Is Worth It

This is one occasion where a bespoke hat makes an enormous difference. A piece designed for your outfit, your face shape, and the wedding colour palette will look cohesive in every photograph for decades to come.
