"A hat is like a declaration of independence; it says, 'I am who I am, and I don't care what anyone else thinks."
— Philip Treacy
This is Treacy at his most defiant, and I love it. Wearing a hat in 2026 is, in many ways, a rebellious act. Most people do not wear hats. Most people play it safe. Choosing to wear one says something powerful about your willingness to stand out.
Every woman who walks into my studio and commissions a bespoke hat is making a declaration. She is saying: I am worth the time, the investment, and the attention. I refuse to blend in.
That kind of confidence is magnetic. And once you have felt it, you understand why Treacy calls it independence. Because a hat frees you from caring what everyone else is doing.
Fun Fact
Treacy's most famous collaborator was arguably Lady Gaga, for whom he created some of her most iconic headpieces: the lobster hat, the telephone hat, the razor blade headpiece, and many others. Gaga once said that Treacy's hats made her feel "like a work of art." The partnership showed that millinery could be as bold, provocative, and boundary-pushing as any art form.
