The headband fascinator is one of the most popular headwear choices for racing and events. It is easy to put on, comfortable to wear, and suits almost everyone. But I hear one complaint more than any other: "It keeps sliding off." Here is how to fix that, and how to style it so it looks effortlessly chic.

"A headband fascinator is the gateway to millinery. Once a woman discovers how easy and flattering they are, she usually comes back for something bigger next season."

Choose the Right Headband

Not all headbands are equal. A slim metal headband wrapped in satin grips better than a chunky plastic one. Look for headbands with teeth or a textured inner surface. I use slim satin-wrapped metal bands that sit snugly without pinching.

How to Stop It Sliding

Texturising spray first. Spray dry shampoo or texturising spray into your hair before placing the headband. This gives the band something to grip.
Bobby pin anchors. Slide two bobby pins in an X behind each ear, underneath the headband, to lock it in place.
Position it right. The headband should sit about 2 cm back from your hairline. Too far forward looks childish. Too far back and it slides.
Avoid freshly washed, silky hair. Day-old hair grips better. If you must wash, use a volumising mousse.
Check the fit. A headband that is too loose will move. A well-made one should feel snug from the start.

Styling Your Headband Fascinator

  • Hair down: Soft waves or a textured blowout look beautiful with a headband piece. The headband frames the face while the hair adds softness.
  • Hair up: A low bun or chignon works well, especially with double headbands or crown styles.
  • Side placement: Many headband fascinators have a focal point on one side. Angle it so the detail sits just above or behind one ear.

For Race Day

A headband fascinator meets the dress code for Stakes Day, garden parties, and most general admission areas at racing carnivals. For Birdcage or Members at Flemington, choose a more substantial headpiece or hat.
