Angela Kelly on Creating Timeless Millinery

Millinery quote by Angela Kelly on timeless design - Kathryn Lee Millinery

"The art of millinery is to create something that is both timeless and modern, a piece that will never go out of style."

— Angela Kelly

Angela Kelly, the personal dresser and milliner to Queen Elizabeth II for over 25 years, knows a thing or two about making hats that endure. Her work had to look impeccable from every angle, in every photograph, at every event. That demands craftsmanship with no room for shortcuts.

Timeless and Modern

What I love about Kelly's philosophy is the balance it strikes. It is not enough for a hat to be classic if it feels stale. And it is not enough to be trendy if it will look dated next season. The magic happens in between.

  • Bold colours — Kelly dressed the Queen in vibrant shades so she could be spotted in any crowd
  • Clean shapes — no fussy details, just perfect proportion
  • Timeless construction — built to be worn for decades, not a single season

"That is the space I try to occupy with every piece that leaves my atelier: honouring traditional techniques while feeling fresh and relevant right now."

— Kathryn Lee

A Little History

Kelly arrived at Buckingham Palace in 1994 as a dresser and rose to become the Queen's personal adviser, curator, and in-house milliner. She designed matching hats for over 5,000 outfits, each one colour-coordinated so Her Majesty could be seen clearly from a distance. Her 2012 book Dressing the Queen revealed the craft behind those iconic looks.
